My Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

Synopsis from Goodreads:

In this modern-day love story, Girl likes Boy, Girl takes photo of Boy and posts it online, Boy becomes accidentally insta-famous. And what starts out as an innocent joke spirals into a whirlwind adventure that could change both their lives—and their hearts—forever. But are fame and love worth the price?

Told in alternating points of view, #famous captures the out-of-control thrill ride of falling for someone in front of everyone.

my-review

A quick and funny read about a social media post gone viral that lead to insta-fame and the people behind them. This book got me hooked from the first page to the last, and it deals with themes that are #trendy, #timely and #relevant. Told in alternating chapters of the two main characters, #famous is a feel good and fluffy contemporary read.

Rachel is this awkward girl with a massive and beautiful hair, she has this crush on her classmate from Creative Writing class—Kyle. When Rachel unintentionally makes Kyle internet famous, she had no idea that it will not only bring fame to them but more.

What I loved most about this book, is the concept and theme. Inside it, we have a Twitter-like social media platform called Flit which is where Rachel posted a “flit” with Kyle’s picture. We also have the book’s counterpart of The Ellen Show. The plot showed how the strangers from internet can be mean and destructive. It showed the two ends of the story, because while Kyle was enjoying his new-found fame and screaming fangirls Rachel is subjected to body shaming and bullying from not only anonymous people from the internet but also people from their school.

One point that I didn’t like was there was too much girl hate. The mean girls were vicious towards Rachel, and I didn’t even got where they were coming from especially the girl, Jesse, her ex-friend. I would have liked to know why she is so mad at Rachel.

The writing style was on point, it made the book enjoyable to read that you can pratically finish it in one sitting. The voices of Rachel and Kyle were both distinct, I liked Rachel’s POV more than Kyle’s because there were times when Kyle’s thoughts were kind of flat and his character in general was too naive at times.

There was no insta-love here, the two developed a bond through friendship where it eventually lead in to something more. I love how the family aspect on both characters were very present and that they contributed a lot in the story, they gave the main characters more depth. For the friendship aspect, it kinda felt off to me on both sides like the best friends were just put there for the sake of having one.

#famous seriously felt like a Disney Channel Original Movie which are one of my favorite kinds of movie. It had the same appeal and charm, because despite having a predictable plot and clichés, you know you’re going to enjoy the story and love the characters.

A relatable and modern tale that is perfect for not only the teens and but everyone who enjoys the wonders of social media. #famous is a quick read that will make you laugh and will bring all the #feels. Just make sure that you’ll have some fries while reading this book!

  1. Love your review! I heard a bit about this book before, and I wanted to add it to my TBR…You comparing it to a Disney Channel Movie kind of sold it to me, I don’t know what this says about the kind of person I am, hahahaha. ANYWAY, I really love how there’s no insta-love and how actual and real the story feels. Too bad about all the girl hate, though. I’m excited to read this sometime soon 🙂

  2. Bummer… I missed the giveaway. But that’s OK I’m still going to read this for sure. I too have trouble with extreme girl hate in books sometimes. Especially with the teenage daughter of my own I cringe to think of her being treated that way and how upset I would be if she treated someone that way. Great review!
